    AMAZING!

The art work in this book is better than its been. However I still dont think its that good. Will have to see how the story develops before I can say anything about that. I would have to say my favorite part of the book is the coloring. There are parts here in there where its not good at all but for the most part not bad.

I’ev got every issues of spawn up till the point where Al remakes the world. Then the clown shows up from the carbage shoot or something. Personally i didn’t like the way HIne handled Armegedon, i didnt like his writing or stories in his run or the art (the coloring was good though). In the past Spawn has had hicups like right after issue 100 for a little bit then it repicked up. Basically i’m back on board because Holguin is back on board, issues 50-100 of Spawn are some of the best reads i’ev gotten from comics and spawn got me into comics. I’m hoping this new run will be as good that one (50-100) or better. With that said…..

    ISSUE 185:
I have no clue what was goling on but i’ll say the writing was good (8/10) the story was meh (4/10) a good set up but empty without suffieceint info on the plot as of yet, the pencils were good (9/10) just as good as any mainstream marvel comic, better than Yu’s work on Secret Invasion not as good as Steve McNiven on Civil War, color were good too (9/10)

Overall it was decent, a great start, but its going to have to pick up and get a LOT more wordy, the plot was waaaaaay to thin, MORE WRITING, the art should enhance the story not BE the story! I’ll be staying on for a 4 more issues if it doesn’t pick up i’m gone, comics cost too much and take to long to come out for me to wait forever on a snails pace plot. although a plot can be slow if you put A LOT of it in each comic, watchmen for example. Overall (7/10) just decent but full of hope, atleast i hope so. Best of luck guys.

Oh i almost forgot to mention the best part was the clown. Thats what saved this issues for me and gives me some hope, he was written very well and drawn very well. the clowns albeit brief part gets a (10/10) although maybe i just miss him, nah.. it was just that good. Great job on him and once again best of luck. Oh and i think McFarlane had the best cover (and honestly didn’t expect that till i saw them online) followed by Portacio, then Cappullo’s.

Question? Are you selling the Spawn rights? there was an add at the end of book the confused me whats that about? i’ll have to check it out

  5. Endgame | October 29th, 2008 2:15 pm

We’re keeping the Spawn rights. The ad is there to let other companies know that we’re now more actively looking to expand Spawn licensing — letting other companies produce their own unique products based on our characters. Stuff like the Kubricks and other collectibles Medicom made, the video games other companies have developed with us, or the snowboards created by Sims. We’ll keep making the comic books, toys, movies, and other products we’re known for; but you just might see Spawn in other forms in the future!

    Wowaweewah!!

I’ve been psyched about this issue ever since I heard of its concept.
It will be awesome to see how this story unfolds. The new art team is amazing, the old team was good in respect, but this new style blows it out of the water. I’m alittle speechless about the ending to this issue, but can’t wait to get my hands on 186 to read more!!
If you guys are licensing the “spawn” name, you should definitely make some t-shirts and stuff!!

And Please Mr. McFarlane!! We need a spawn movie!! You should see if Frank Miller would direct it, that would be sweet!
Great job on this comic! It’s been worth the wait!!

  7. KoRnBoy5676 | October 29th, 2008 5:16 pm

I liked this issue alot and can’t wait for the next one. Too bad we go back to one issue per month , I liked a new spawn every two weeks.

  8. Ray | October 29th, 2008 5:35 pm

I started reading comics around the time when Image started and Spawn first came out. I was an avid reader of the book for the first couple of years, but unfortunately I haven’t read an issue since somewhere in the 30’s. I was really intrigued by the collaboration of todd and whilce as well as the new direction of the book so I decided to pick it up. Honestly I was a little lost at first since I’ve missed the last 150 issues, but I was definitely impressed and I’m really excited to read more of the book that got me into comics in the first place. I can’t wait for 186 !

  9. SAlvador | October 29th, 2008 9:31 pm

Spawn 185 was good and I can not wait for more. Whilce you are an amazing talent. Todd thanks for being back on the book. Jin han the colors are great. This issue left me with a lot of questions and I can not wait to find out.

  10. MOONKNIGHT | October 30th, 2008 7:02 am

I am a spawn fan that is catching up. I am through vol 4 and about to start vol 5. I have been waiting for the right moment to jump back into the new stuff and this seemed like the logical choice. I though it was ok i was a litte lost since i am still catching up, but the art was really good and much different than what i am used to in a spawn book. I will say i hope there is more story developement in the next issue i realize this is setting the stage for the this run, but it was really kind of thin on story. Overall I am expecting great things

  11. wave | October 30th, 2008 7:12 am

Awesome issue. I can tell there’s the genius’ (Todd) touch in it!!!

  12. BrikHed | October 30th, 2008 12:21 pm

It was decent - the art was great and the story was intriguing but since we are starting something new there are tons of questions.

I am going to be driving to AZ to kill somebody on the extra covers though. I have ever single cover (except the B&W #1) since the start of Spawn and now I have to find these two variants? Come on. My shop only ordered what I ordered so I got my three.

  13. Kevin | October 30th, 2008 12:25 pm

Nooooooo…I’m hoping the last page isn’t really the end for Al. (though it looks like a hard thing to recover from) I’ve stuck it out through the ups and downs of this series. But if it really is over for Al then my entire collection of spawn ends here. Awesome run.

  14. Ken | October 30th, 2008 7:08 pm

I have bought Spawn monthly since I was 12 years old at issue #18. Out of all comic books, I can say that Spawn is the one that I grew up with. I have stuck with it through thick- Issues 164-184 and thin -Issues 101-140. I have to say, since I heard about the drastic changes to the book a few months ago I have been really worried. I will stick with you Todd & co. as I always have for these past 16 years or so. I trust you will make bold, if not interesting decisions. I believe that this book will always be different from most out there, but I hope that this new direction doesn’t stray to close toward the superhero team themed plots that most Marvel and DC comics are threaded to. It seems like it might in a” McFarlene -esque” tone.

Although I take my time reading Spawn,in Issue 185 I found my eyes drifting more towards the dialogue from a lack of interesting, or eye-catching artwork. However towards the end of the book from when the clown enters the art became really appealing. Portacio seems to have drawn the best clown/violator yet! I’m sure the artwork will manifest into a better form after a few issues as I have seen with every new artist that you have taken in. The issue as a whole did seem to be lacking an identifiable story which I know is because it’s just the first pieces of a big new picture. However, it still seemed to feel like it was missing story for such an important issue. Best of luck with the new direction. You know I’ll be traveling on the road with you. Continue moving forward with progressive thinking but please be careful!

  15. K | October 31st, 2008 11:20 am

Although im all up for a change in character im actually wondering how the Clown is going to react to Al’s death(re-death?).I mean these two have been at it since the very beginning and im guessing the Violator deep down thought that it would be him that would deliver the finishing blow.

  16. jarod | October 31st, 2008 7:29 pm

    wow, that last page…

that blew me away great job, havn’t read spawn in years glad I came back for this

  17. Brian | November 1st, 2008 2:48 am

I had always seen Spawn as the story of a man seeking redemption. No matter what spectacular themes of good and evil, Heaven and Hell, it was a story about a man and his journey to find peach in himself. I was very upset to see that man kill himself in issue #185. Don’t get me wrong. I understand that Al Simmons really saw his end after the Armageddon story line. I was convinced that it was over then. When the book continued after that I was sure my analysis of the redemption theme was correct.

So why does Al’s ending seem so empty? I find myself in mourning over a hero I have cared about for sixteen years. I’ve bought many comics, followed many stories, but the Spawn title was the one I never quit. In good or bad, I bought the book because I cared about Al and wanted to see what happens to him. Due to low comic sales, one of my heroes has been killed. I understand why, I will continue to buy the book if not only to see why Todd killed Al. I have continued to support this book for sixteen years and I still have hope in it’s new incarnation.

I suppose I’m writing this out of grief. I believe that the new team on the book is going to impress us with this new direction. But for now, I’d like to raise a toast to Al Simmons. My hero and yours. May you find peace. Cheers

  18. Bushboy | November 1st, 2008 7:56 am

I’m horribly saddened to see Al go. Kinda glad we won’t have to deal with Wanda and co. now, as they started to get annoying. I felt like there wasn’t much to do with Al after Armageddon, so I understand why he’s gone. Hopefully the new guy will be able to carry the title now, even though it’s not about the new guy. It’s about Spawn. Spawn is more than just some super-hero alter-ego, and from interviews and such from Todd, it looks like that’s what he’s trying to convey. I’ll stick around as long as the book is about Spawn, not the person underneath. Oh yeah, great art Whilce!

  19. greayagh | November 1st, 2008 8:17 pm

I like it a lot, looking forward for #186

  20. D. Allaxul | November 2nd, 2008 2:32 am

Personally, It took me at least 3 full readings of #185 to really grasp what I had just read. I mean, the last page alone made me want to re-read the book over and over for hints and clues as to what would happen next. Right now, I am clueless… but I think that will keep me interested, and determined to continue reading the series.

Now, on to other matters.. Although, I really dig the artwork, I feel it is lacking compared to the dark realism of “The New Flesh” storyline. I know that may not have been everyone’s cup of tea, but I, personally, thought it gave more of the urban legend feel to the book. Please, understand that I am not dissing on the artwork, it is quite amazing, just not what I was expecting after reading the previous issues (post-Armageddon).

Of course, the coloring job was simply amazing… but then again, when is Spawn not on the top of their game when it comes to coloring?

Now, I am dying to read #186. I have no earthly idea where the story is heading off to, but I am excited to see where Todd & Co. takes us to next.

And, who the fuck is patient 47? It still boggles my brain trying to figure out what he plays in all of this. Is he Al resurrected? Or will He be the next Hellspawn?

Either way, I’m anxious to see what will happen next…..

  21. mindsplit | November 3rd, 2008 10:25 am

i have been a spawn fan since the beginning and for me the artwork is what keeps me coming back issue after issue. the artwork as of late isnt as good as it used to be but i kept coming back out of loyalty to the comic. when i heard that the original artists were coming back i was really hoping the comic would get back to its roots and present us with an amazing looking book. although the artwork was defintely better i wasnt blown away. i was looking for artwork that would explode off the page wth amazing visuals and colours like it used to and the book still seems rather drab and lifeless. i will definitely stick around because i like where the story is going but im hoping every issue that the artwork goes back to it was way back in issue #1.

    keep up the good work

  22. shanahan | November 3rd, 2008 11:14 am

Well for all the naysayers out there, I just want to point out that their way too critical and negative. Spawn has been so much better than it was 9 years ago when I started reading it. The art is better, the storyline has been getting progressively better and there have been some really exceptional covers. Thats the reason I keep buying Spawn, and will probably continue to do so indefinitely. I’ve picked up many comics over the past decade and haven’t been able to stick with one running series besides Spawn. Its great to see Todd back with his book, I mean Hine did a fantastic job with the past 30 or so issues but it wasnt the same without Spawn’s daddy.

  23. snow_leopard0713 | November 4th, 2008 3:31 am

    how did al die?

  24. K | November 4th, 2008 5:59 am

read the book(its a real eye opener :)

  25. Jason Alberts | November 4th, 2008 9:30 am

Hello to everyone!-First off let me say that I have been a fan of Spawn since the beginning. This is also my first post to Spawn.com. Well, I have picked up 4 of the 5 covers of #185, only missing the b&w Portacio varient. I read it and I have to say that I was blown away, no pun intended. I have not been this excited about Spawn since Todd and Greg were handling the art. Don’t get me wrong, the past teams have done a fantastic job in my opinion, but this is the look that I have been waiting for! Todd, Brian, and Whilce are doing some great storytelling already and its just getting started. The work is simply brilliant and it clicks on so many levels. There seems to be some readers that are saying the plot is too thin, the coloring is off, etc., etc. I do not think so! Yes it is a quick read-at first. However if you are true Spawn fan, or for that matter a fan of great storytelling, then you will see the many little things in #185 that the creators are showing us. Those of you that aren’t getting it or think its lame, I suggest you take a long hard look at Spawn’s past. You will then see what I am talking about. Anyway thank you guys for the start of a new ride. You can count me being strapped in for the long haul.

  26. Leo | November 4th, 2008 7:10 pm

I just want to ask…. Why?… I mean, I’ve been reading almost all the coments, most of them just talk about the art and story-telling….. Some of them says that they understand Al’s death….. But I don’t get it…

Yeah yeah, after armaggedon he didn’t have anything to do…. But with the new team, I tought Al was going to get in a new adventure or something… Al Simmons/Spawn is like the best thing in the world and I just can’t accept that he’s dead.

So why?… Tell me why did he died? Why did you kill him?

I’m a Spawn fan and I will keep buying the book to see what happens…. But I really want to know why did he died and the most important thing…. Is he coming back?… I mean, enough with killing characters! Marvel and DC killed very important characters, I know they had their reasons in the plot, like with captain america and the civil war thing…… But Spawn?!…. I’m sorry, I’m shocked.

So hopefully you answer my question. Good luck.

  27. snow_leopard0713 | November 5th, 2008 3:53 am

Does anyone here agree that the spawn: age of the pharaohs action figure line should get a comic book?

  28. piesano | November 5th, 2008 9:26 am

Quick question-How many issues is the “Endgame” storyline scheduled for, and will it be collected as a graphic novel after it is over?

  29. JAB1978 | November 5th, 2008 7:01 pm

I’ve been with you guys since day one - through the good, the bad, and the ugly. I’ve seen plot twists that made me slaver for the newest issue, and ones that just plain confused the shit out of me and made me want to quit reading. But I never stopped. I hoped for a day that all the reboots, inane plot twists, and new creative teams would come to an end, and Spawn would return to its glorious origins. A day that Todd, the master and creator, would turn his sights back to his lost child and rescue it from comic book purgatory .
Issue #185 was like a teaser, a taste of what’s to come. It had all the feeling of old-school, pre-Armageddon Spawn - the Spawn book I fell in love with and kept me reading all these years. Seeing the Violator back was like being 14 again; that green blast of ectoplasmic energy was like a ray of hope, illuminating that infamous NY alley where it all started, and the empty throne awaiting the return of its king. I hope this is the payoff I’ve been waiting for, Todd. The reboot to end all reboots…

  30. James | November 6th, 2008 2:29 pm

I loved the artwork in this issue and the return of Clown but for some reason the new direction of the story was kinda eh but ill certainly keep reading Spawn till the end!

  31. Gerardy C. | November 9th, 2008 6:48 pm

I understand what Todd is doing with this new twist. He is recreating Spawn, just as Issue 1 showed how Al Simmons became Spawn and the story behind him and why he was chosen, and eventually ungrateful with his powers (responsibility and burden of being hell’s chosen pawn) killed himself. This is where issue 185 starts the birth of the new Hell’s Pawn, hopefully somebody that has a connection with all of the characters, or maybe not, we don’t know yet. I am assuming that it is patient 47 since he has been in a comma for a long time, but we have not really seen him in any of the previous issues that I know about (mind I have read all of them 1-185); therefore we can see that such person might be the new “Simmons” and we will get to see his story unravel and where he comes from and how he becomes the next chosen one. These are assumptions but they seem pretty clear from what I got by reading the story and making the connections. We can immediately deduct that this new story is about a new beginning for Spawn and I don’t think that Al Simmons should come back, if he didn’t want it, he took his life for a new character to carry his legacy in a better way.

Enough of the story, as for the artwork. I think is a mix of the old Spawn that we all came to love and admire with the post-Armageddon look, and I can see why, it’s a new hell’s pawn why have the same suit as the old one. Sweet spikes!! As for the clown and I believe Jason Wynn also came back for a second, I am glad that they look the way they did before (Before Armageddon). I did not like the way they looked in the previous issues (After Armageddon). How the clown looked like they starved him. I hope they do change lord Mammon too, put some hair on that dude (if he comes back). But I am really satisfied where this is going. And Todd you can count me in to be totally faithful to Spawn. I have read all of them so far and collected them and I will keep going with you. I was getting tired of Al whining every single time. Hopefully this new guy mans up and does something for the planet.

  32. Stephen T. Gouge | November 10th, 2008 1:52 pm

Great stuff! Can’t wait to read more!

  33. Matt Lillard | November 11th, 2008 9:47 am

Hey all, just read issue #185 and bought another copy to keep as a collectible. Anyway I enjoyed the comic for the most part. I did feel that it was kind of short from some of the original comics but then again I haven’t read the original comics for awhile so this is just from memory. I liked the art style for the most part. I could really tell it was a darker world than the previous comics. However I am kind of confused as far as the story is this comic a brand new side of the story or is this a continuation. My guess is that your continuing since the comic points out that Spawn and Violator are already established. Overall I give it a 7 out of 10 just because I wanted to have a little more story in the first issue. But I can’t wait until the next issue gotta find out what the hell he’s doing blowing his head off! Overall Great Job guys, can’t wait to see more and I think it’s awesome that your involving the community into the feedback. Any chance that the Toddcast is coming back?

  34. snow_leopard0713 | November 14th, 2008 3:47 am

Anyone, is there a unification of the Image comics universe in the plans?

  35. adrian | November 14th, 2008 2:15 pm

hey there i´m a big fan of your book. spawn is the only comic book that i buy regularily. not the x men not spiderman not wolverine not batman . spawn it is. sure i´d pick it up secret invasion and final crisis too right now but i´ve never let you. i´m from mexico city and here it goes in the issue 175 but i´ve bought the issue 185 in my comics store cause i´d read in wizard that todd come back to the title. when i saw the cover of jim lee of issue 150 i´d wish that jim draw in the title someday but when i see the art of whilce i know that he´s perfect for spawn. i love it. i hope ( and beg ) that todd made most of the covers or even an entire issue. im waiting for the image united miniseries and i can´t wait to have in my hands the spawn book of the dead. i wonder if the spawn batman inner demons crossover has already come out? here in my country hasn´t arrived. i wait for answers. thanks for the best comic in the world. bye

  36. Ben | November 25th, 2008 7:21 pm

THE best SPAWN issue in a F********G long, too F********G long time.
Buy it, read it, and talk about it !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  37. CHRODH MARA | December 16th, 2008 1:51 am

I enjoy the artwork thoroughly, the story was great, I just have to settle within myself the very real events perplexing the continuation of Al Simmons. (or lack thereof) It’s kind of scary to say the least, but if I’ve learned anything from the Spawn comic book all these years it’s that, in real life we may be left without our security blankets at some point or another, and have to simply move forward to untrodden paths that may seem horrible. I am excited to see what unfolds in the new generation of the spawn mythos.

  38. Carlos | December 19th, 2008 12:35 pm

Well, where do I begin? first of all, I´ve got to say that for me the previous issues to 100th were the best for me with the return of Kincaid, the Dead Zone, The Green World, Urizen and finally, the death of Malebolgia and Angela. That was the best times.
I thought both of them will be coming back like DC´s or Marvel´s character do, they always do right?, but as time passes and new issues were going they didn´t. And I knew then that the Spawn comics WAS different from all others. Then, some hiatus came and nothing important relly happend until when Cogliostro takes the crown of hell. That was interesting too. And when things point to Armaggedon I was amazed because I felt excited because it was so big, the end of the world, the riders of the apocalypse, at last we see God and the Devil, and most of all, Al Simmons have to died again to became a god!! that was amazing, brilliant, excellent. And I really think it was the end of the comic story, because that was the whole plot right? the armageddon and the battle between heaven and hell. If you have finished the story there, I would have been pleased. A little sad maybe, but satisfied.

Then you keep the story going and obviously I was curious as a fan so I keep reading the stories but with every new issue, I was more and more dissapointed because the lack of an interesting story, the missing conection with previous issues. The sad thing was that the interesting stories for me was of the others Spawns: mandarin, gunslinger, war. Meanwhile, with Al Simmons you made a lot of deus ex machinas to fit the plot. You take away the influence and the power that Malebolgia had once and give it to Mammon. In every issue Mammon shows up, I was boring to see him always and upsetting, and I didn´t like it at all. Finally, you did it, you mess it up. In one or two issues you “solve” almost all the plots an loose wires with silly and simple things: Mammon did everything and a binding spell from a future Cyan. Is that the Mother of all Deus Ex Machina of what? hey and what is that or why clown returns? he is been killed more times than superman, batman, spiderman all together!! I thought you were different from the other companies.

And know you kill Al Simmons, and what happened to redemption? All for this? you simply blow his head off literally, like the other companies kill their heroes. And now you say that this is the new direction, and now Todd it´s back. Sorry but I´m not convinced anymore that his return gives the comic success guaranteed. You said that it has to be done to keep the story going but I don´t agree with you. I believe you run out of ideas, despite that you still have some plots to develop. What happened to Cogliostro? I really miss the Hellspawn´s, Spawn the Undead´s, Curse of the Spawn´s stories and plots when it was a time where it was shown to us that it is not necessary to kill yor main character and bring another bacause things are going wrong.

Maybe a I´ll check two or three more issues but if it doesn´t convince me , I will drop the only comic that I´ve been following since its beginning. I hope that Wynn doesn´t return as clown did. It suposed to be new material, not the same over and over.

  39. Jose G. Guerrero | April 1st, 2009 10:40 pm

first of all…hello and congratulations for mazing and interesting comic of the hellspawn…. as a fan of spawn since the begining of issues 93 (but then I read the other past comics), I’m a little sad about al’s dead and interested about the new…. but I’ll keep reading it cause I want to know where all this going, I’ll be waiting the capullo’s back and even a flashback of al simmons… with this I’ll get a little satisfied…. I’m not gonna push you like the others cause I know you have plans and we all the fans know that your plans are goods….

well that’s all.. I hope you keep it for more time and don’t surrender cause there’re too many fans that hope to see more spawn for a long time … well not so long but a think you gonna leave some students so that your work don’t end just like that (like the movie “saw” )……..
