JEAN ST. JEAN/RANDY FALK

How satisfied are you with the way Samurai Wars figures came out?

We are all very satisfied with the way the Samurai figures came out in production. These are the most detailed figures we have ever produced both as two-up sculpts and in final toy production. We have incorporated some new elements like braided hair and fur in the costumes that really add to the overall appearance of the figures. The Samurai line has set a new standard in the level of detail and articulation in one series. There is so much going on in each figure like all the little pictures and etchings carved into the pieces of armor. We ended up putting in so much with the detail and accessories that some of the weapons had to be separated into their own accessory pack. We wanted to make sure the fans could get everything that we intended to produce for the Samurais. Also our factories really came through in translating all that we set out to achieve with this line.

How accurate to the true feudal Japanese time period is the ornamentation on the figures?

The costumes and detail on the armor and braids are very authentic to the true feudal Japanese time period. The weapons are stylized. We used a bit of artistic license with the weapons to make them more visually interesting.

Also, what did you use as reference when designing the characters' costumes and weapons?

The reference we used in designing the characters and weapons was a combination of detailed book and Internet research. We used historical books such as Arms and Armor of the Samurai, Samurai Warlords, Samurai Sourcebook, Samurai Armies 1550-1615, Military Swords of Japan and the Kanji Dictionary in our research.
