Shamed, Jorvak fled into the hills. There, some say, he prayed not to Odin, but to Loki, the god of mischief and deceit. Legend says that Jorvak's prayers were answered and that Loki came down from Valhalla sliding down the back of a serpent that stretched as far as the eye could see. There, before Loki, Jorvak declared his hatred of Erik Bloodaxe and his terrible hunger for revenge.

"I will grant you the power to eliminate your enemy," Loki said as the endless serpent slithered and coiled around his body, "but for this favor, you will throughout eternity be in my service and you will bear a reminder of this upon your head."

So filled with rage, Jorvak did not hesitate. Perhaps he did not hear the evil god's full words or perhaps he did not care. Regardless, Jorvak Skullsplitter nodded his head and knelt down before Loki, saying, "I swear by my soul. Grant me power and I will serve you."

It was done. Jorvak began to shudder. His heart pounded and suddenly his blood ran cold as the ice beneath his feet. His face hardened and twisted and Loki began to laugh. When it was over, Jorvak Skullsplitter was no longer a man, but a thing with the face of a horned demon.

"What have you done to me?" Jorvak screamed.
