todd mcfarlane
exclusive interview with spawn.com
Todd McFarlane is a busy man. An entrepreneur. A mogul, if you will. Spawn.com managed to sneak into his over-the-garage lair for a few hours one afternoon with our questions and tape recorder in tow. During those hours, Todd had a video conference, finished lunch, tentatively approved several toy lines, talked to licensing people and took a couple of phone calls. But when the record button was pushed and the talk turned to the Spawn comic book, Todd was totally focused on his creation. Despite all his other endeavors, Spawn seems to be his true love and he can talk about his hellish entity for hours. Enjoy ...

SPAWN.COM: Spawn making it to #100 is a big deal in the world of independent comics. What are your thoughts and feeling about this milestone?

TODD McFARLANE: Well, you've got two things you've gotta concentrate on: One is sorta the celebratory part of it, that yes, we made it to issue 100. We're alive. The number 100 sort of sends out a message. But, to the layman, that's nice and dandy, but now you've got the second part: Is issue 100 going to be cool? That's the one we can't lose sight of, we can't sit there and make # 100 some sort of tribute issue. We have to make it a legitimate story that actually is worthy of being issue 100. We've got a story, we've got visuals and a couple key moments about a couple key characters that, I'm hoping, will actually deliver the goods. Greg (Capullo, pencils) artistically went out of his way, along with Danny (Miki, inks), with a little help from me, so ... all of us were conscious that this was issue 100 when we put it together. And so, the story may not be as long as fans want, but we added a lot of what I feel is solid editorial content.
To me, I see this book as cover-to-cover entertainment, not just a story and art. Once you read the articles, I'm hoping all of it together says, "That was worthy of being dubbed 100."

SC: Without giving anything away, just how important is this issue, not in a celebratory sense, but in the sense of a good story? How important is this issue in the context of the Spawn mythos that you've created?
