TM: I think it's big for a couple reasons. The big plot is, not one, but two characters die. Now, if you can get one good death in a comic book, you've done something. Let me go on record as saying that I find it offensive when a character dies and then comes back from the grave three years later, because it cheapens the effect. I will say the characters that die in this book, you will never, ever see them again, other than if someone is thinking about them and flashing back. They're not going to resurrect themselves. To me, dead is dead. Also, the other important thing is, the impact of the loss of characters that die is significant in how Spawn now reacts to the rest of the world. It's not like I killed some fifth-level bum. These are characters that have been in and out of the Spawn mythology for some time ...

SC: And they've shaped the Spawn character.

TM: Yeah, they helped create some of the history. Now, Spawn is gonna have to move forward a little bit and make assumptions about his future because a few of the chess pieces are missing. The game has now shifted a bit and the strategy has shifted, too.

SC: With that in mind, do you have a very clear picture of where Spawn is going after #100?

TM: Yeah, I mean, you know, (pauses) we're sort of adding another layer. You get a clearer vision of that as you go along. The biggest thing that's going to happen with Spawn is to make him more proactive -- more aggressive -- instead of always letting the battle come to him. I think, one thing the fans have gotten tired of over the years is him waiting around for Wanda and tripping into a battle or something.
