Showgoers Excited About Upcoming Sports Action Figures

The McFarlane Collection - 10 historic Mark McGwire/Sammy Sosa home run baseballs from the record-breaking 1998 season - and Todd McFarlane himself were on hand Sept. 1-4 at Tri-Star Production's San Francisco Sports Collectible Show.

For collectors, San Francisco is the place to be on Labor Day weekend as exhibitors from all over the country hit the Bay Area to display their wares. Having the Collection on-site and Todd McFarlane signing autographs - along with such other celebs as Bill Russell and Barry Bonds - only added to the hype.

Todd signed on Saturday, Sept. 2 and, according to several folks in attendance, his line was roughly twice as long as that for professional baseball player Barry Bonds, who plays for the San Francisco Giants. And Todd doesn't charge a fee for autographs!

"It was a pretty cool place, but I didn't leave my heart there," McFarlane joked. "Seriously, after seeing the two-up of his action figure, Barry went out and blasted four home runs over the next two games."

But the biggest hit of the weekend, according to Collection spokesman Al "Spawn" Simmons, were the two-ups (double-sized versions of Bonds, Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa) of some of our upcoming Big League Challenge professional baseball players.

"People can't wait for them to come out," Simmons said.

Though they weren't able to buy the baseball figures, attendees could purchase our first series of NHLPA hockey figures ... if they were quick about it.

That's right, several vendors had our NHLPA hockey action figures - Patrick Roy, Steve Yzerman, Ray Bourque, Paul Kariya, Tony Amonte and Curtis Joseph - for sale. You had to be fast, though, as everyone sold out of the figures pretty quickly. Similar stories are being reported by most major retailers who got initial NHLPA shipments.
