Becomes Widest Release in History

Due to overwhelming demand, DreamWorks' computer animated comedy Shrek added another 54 locations to its run last weekend, making it the widest release ever. In a move that is virtually unprecedented in a film's fourth week in release, Shrek increased its run to a record-breaking 3,715 locations, passing Mission: Impossible 2's previous record of 3,669 locations.

Opening nationwide May 18, Shrek had grossed $176.6 million as of the June 8-10 weekend. Industry analysts say the film should easily break the $200 million barrier domestically.

"This is a textbook case of supply and demand. Shrek is growing in demand and [DreamWorks] is just increasing the supply. Based on the numbers we've seen, the movie can definitely handle those theaters and audience. It's playing so well everywhere, interest is growing, and word of mouth is incredible," said Paul Dergarabedian, president of box-office tracking company Exhibitor Relations, in an interview with E Online.

In toy news, all the Shrek lines continue to move briskly and are among the hottest-selling toys currently on the market.

We're working on a promotion with DreamWorks Home Video to celebrate the release of the Shrek video and DVD later this year. And McFarlane Toys is currently developing new Shrek toys for the holiday shopping season.
