SAN DIEGO COMIC-CON '05 WRAPUP
Todd Was In Town; Event Was a Stunning Success

Once again, the McFarlane Companies were well represented at the annual Comic-Con International in San Diego, as staffers had the opportunity to meet and converse with an overwhelming number of fans and curious onlookers -- some having been fans since the day the first issue of Spawn hit shelves, others who are relatively new to what we do with our various collectible- and entertainment-related endeavors.

While Comic-Con is always one of the highlights of our year -- filled with big announcements and the unique chance to discuss our products (past, present and future) with fans face-to-face-- this year proved to be all we have come to expect and more. Much more.

Highlighted by Todd McFarlane's return to the Con (after a two-year absence), there were a number of big events and even bigger revelations made in San Diego this year, including:

  • The unveiling of our Tim Burton's Corpse Bride, Wallace and Gromit -- The Curse of the Were-Rabbit, Napoleon Dynamite and Spawn Series 28: Regenerated two-up prototypes (corresponding with their addition to our Online Toy Catalog right here on spawn.com).

  • The world premiere of the Spawn: Animation teaser trailer at the Film Roman panel. Terry Fitzgerald, president of Todd McFarlane Entertainment, and a group from Film Roman spoke with fans about Spawn's highly anticipated return to the world of animation, answering questions and giving hints as to what can be expected.

  • The introduction of the new creative team slated to take the Spawn comic book in new directions while bringing some of the existing plot points to their jaw-dropping conclusions. The new team: writer David Hine, artist Philip Tan and editor Brian Haberlin.

  • The "Todd McFarlane Tells All" panel, which included special guests David Hine, Philip Tan, Brian Haberlin and Jon Heder (AKA Napoleon Dynamite), was a huge success. Todd not only discussed action figures and comics, but also our upcoming entertainment projects. He offered those in attendance a chance to view the teaser trailer for the upcoming animation as well as a special sneak peek trailer at his dark vision for the newest live-action incarnation of Spawn.
Following Todd's panel, he and Jon Heder appeared separately at the McFarlane Companies' booth for a brief signing session that ended up flooding the booth with hundreds of fans just in time for our comic book signing featuring the new creative team along with Nat Jones, Jay Fotos, inker extraordinaire Danny Miki and letterer Tom Orzechowski. A number of lucky fans who came by the booth for our Napoleon Dynamite signing were given a free limited-edition signing plate featuring an image of our "Napoleon in Prom Suit" figure and a special high school notebook-style signing area for Jon to autograph.

In addition to all of the appearances, signings and Q&As, we also held hourly raffles for an assortment of action figures and comics, including a grand prize of one entire set of McFarlane's Military figures signed by Todd.

We would like to thank everyone who took the time to stop by the booth. Rest assured we are already setting plans in motion for next year's Comic-Con. See you there.
