Horror Writer Directs First Film Since 1995, New Toy Line Out 2004

Famed author, artist and director Clive Barker agreed last week to write and direct the Tortured Souls movie project based on the McFarlane Toys' line of the same name, bringing the project one step closer to the silver screen.

Normally you'd go to a store to buy toys based on the latest blockbuster movie. But, if you're Todd and Clive, you'd first design a line of toys, write a background story to go with it and then sell the plot to Hollywood. That's exactly what happened in late 2001, when the renowned horror duo inked a deal with Universal Studios for a movie based on the original Clive Barker's Tortured Souls action figure line. We're excited Clive has the passion and desire in this project to add writing and directing to his producing role. Todd will be a consultant on the script and both he and Terry Fitzgerald, president of Todd McFarlane Entertainment, will be producing along with Barker's Seraphim Films studio executive Joe Daley.

This will be Clive's first time in the director's chair since 1995 when he directed Lord of Illusions for MGM. Barker says he is pleased with his collaboration with Todd on the project. The duo bring a great mix of ideas and a wide range of knowledge in the horror genre to this project.

In the big screen adaptation of Tortured Souls, the story will begin with a man who is unhappy with his wife and their life together. The husband makes the wrong guy aware of his feelings and there an "exchange" takes place. Before he knows it, he is dealing with a demon, and his wife has to escape from a dangerous world of monsters. In a race against time, his wife must overcome her fear to save her child and vanquish the demon.

Stay tuned to for additional details on the movie project, as well as updates on Clive Barker's Tortured Souls Series 3 figure line, slated for a summer 2004 release.
