First Large-Scale Baseball and Basketball Figures Coming
Friday, September 24, 2004

Some say size doesn't matter, but McFarlane Toys has new figures for those who believe that "bigger is better." This fall, we're taking our NBA and MLB Sports Picks figures to a whole new level!

We will be offering our first 12-inch-scale MLB and NBA figures. The 12-inch program was launched in 2003 with five NFL figures and a pair of NHL stars as well. The figures proved to be immensely popular, which led to sequels to both lines and the expansion to include MLB and NBA players as well. For our first 12-inch MLB figures we chose two of the most popular players in current and recent baseball history.

Nolan Ryan is the all-time strikeout king and turned heads as the most popular figure in this summer's 6-inch Cooperstown Collection. "The Ryan Express" ran through four different Major League clubs, but his 12-inch figure features him in his home Texas Rangers jersey in his classic mid-delivery pose.

Those who didn't know Sammy Sosa's skills through Cubs games televised coast-to-coast on WGN learned about them in the great homer chase of 1998. Although Mark McGwire pulled away with the home run title, it was Sosa who won MVP and in the years since "Slammin' Sammy" has continued his climb up the all-time home run list. Sosa sits at eighth place all-time, but could climb as high as fourth with just 15 more home runs. Sosa is depicted in his post-homer "hop" and wearing the Cubs' blue road jersey; this combination was only available in 6-inch scale as an exclusive figure from the 2003 All-Star FanFest in Chicago.

For our first 12-inch NBA figures, we selected two of the brightest young stars in the league.

Yao Ming has established himself as the dominant big man in the Western Conference and heads into this NBA season with new teammate Tracy McGrady ready to take Houston deep into the playoffs. Ming in featured in his home white jersey, putting up his indefensible "right hook."

LeBron James lived up to the monstrous hype during his rookie season and will be back to lead the Cavaliers this year and into the future. The most-anticipated rookie in NBA history is depicted in the pose of his first Sports Picks figure with a few changes. His head was re-sculpted to add his signature headband and his Nike shoes have been updated to reflect the style he'll be wearing when the season tips off.

Unfortunately, we do not yet have final photography of the Yao or updated James figures, but please enjoy the pictures of the two 12-inch MLB figures. Look for the 12-inch Ryan and Sosa figures to arrive in stores in mid-November, and for the 12-inch Ming and James figures to arrive one month later.
