CAPULLO, McFARLANE CREATE COVER ART FOR DISTURBED CD Artwork will be Unveiled on Spawn.com Friday, Aug. 19 Tuesday, August 09, 2005
The rock band Disturbed will unveil the cover art for its forthcoming Ten Thousand Fists album by renowned comic artist Greg Capullo and producer/director/artist Todd McFarlane on Friday, Aug. 19 here at spawn.com. The intriguing album art has been under wraps but incorporates imagery from the band's past. Singer David Draiman explained the album art: "We wanted to bring our old icon, the Disturbed smiley face, whom we call 'the guy' to life. I came up with a concept that embodied what the record was about, the 'guy' leading an army of people from all walks of life and all colors of skin, with their fists raised in unison, as a symbol of unity, strength and defiance with an azure sky in the background. Being a fan of the Spawn comic book series and the artwork that Todd and his company have done in the past, we could think of no better team to bring this idea to life. We are incredibly pleased with the piece, and think it is the most striking and certainly our favorite of the three covers." McFarlane commented: "The hardest part of doing any album cover art is making that piece different enough from all the other CDs that may be surrounding it at a store. I believe that Greg Capullo and I have delivered an image that will be evocative and inspiring. Much like the music that Disturbed has unleashed upon us." In connection with the album art debut, Disturbed will give away a guitar signed by the band members and Todd McFarlane via their Web site www.disturbed1.com. Ten Thousand Fists marks Disturbed's first studio album in three years and is due out Sept. 20 on Reprise Records. Driven to take their unique, hard rock sound to new creative heights, Disturbed have shaped an album that Draiman says "seems to fuse the brutality and darkness of The Sickness with the added melodic nature and complexity of Believe (Billboard.com, 6/21/05)." The band will introduce North American fans to some of the new songs -- including the first single, "Stricken" -- during their in-progress six-and-a-half-week U.S. tour. Although "Stricken," has just gone to radio, "Guarded" -- a track that was offered to specialty metal radio shows -- is now Top 10 at Mainstream Rock radio as a result of popular demand. Recorded in the band's hometown of Chicago, the 14-track album was produced by Johnny K, who also guided 2000's The Sickness and 2002's Believe. A modern hard rock essential, The Sickness sold 3.4 million copies while the equally evocative and platinum-plus-selling Believe debuted at #1 on Billboard's Top 200 chart.
