TODD PLAYS IN CELEBRITY POKER TOURNAMENT
Proceeds Benefit Arizona Charities
Friday, June 22, 2007

A full house isn't full enough.

That is how Todd McFarlane's evening ended last night at the Arizona Diamondbacks Celebrity Poker Tournament at the Gila River Casino.

Part of the fun of the evening was that Todd's wife Wanda also played in the tourney.

There were around 200 participants, each flanked BY a celebrity at their table. Some took the tournament very seriously; others just wanted to have fun, raise money for Arizona charities and mingle with their favorite celebrities.

Among the celebs playing were former MLB players Matt Williams and Mark Grace, local media icons Mark Asher (of KTAR radio's "Gambo and Ash"), Tim Hattrick (of KNIX radio's "Tim & Willy") and several of the D-Backs brass, including general partner Jeff Moorad and president Derrick Hall.

The evening kicked off at 6pm shortly after Todd and Wanda's arrival at the casino. After a quick registration and a few moments in the VIP Players Lounge, it was time to head to the tables. Todd was placed at Table 5, while Wanda was escorted to Table 11.

Everything seemed to start off well. Todd hung in for the first round prior to the 10-minute break; Wanda seemed to be dominating her table with her chip count. However, everything went downhill upon return from the break.

Todd eventually went all in with his full house - normally an excellent move. However, his opponent did likewise, also with a full house - with a higher pair. That spelled the end of the evening for Todd; Wanda last about 30 more minutes, eliminating at least three players at her table alone, including a celebrity who will remain shamed and nameless (sportstalk-show host MARK ASHER!).

The good news is that essentially everybody won, as this tournament raised a lot of money for the D-Backs Foundation, which provides financial assistance to a variety of important charities around the valley.

So who did McFarlane staffers bet would prevail in the tournament?

Sorry Todd. The majority favored Wanda more than 3-1. Better luck next time.
