FREE COMIC BOOK DAY WRAP-UP
Arizona Fans Meet and Chat with Image Comics Founders
Friday, May 09, 2008
Last Saturday, May 3, was National Free Comic Book Day - the one great day in the year when comic books are free to all people.
Here in Arizona, Atomic Comics shops across the state celebrated the day in style with signings by industry heavyweights. Atomic's Mesa, Ariz. location hosted the original founding members of Image comics -- our own Todd McFarlane (Spawn, Spider-Man), Jim Lee (X-Men, WildCATS), Rob Liefeld (X-Force, Youngblood), Marc Silvestri (Wolverine, Witchblade), Whilce Portacio (Batman, Wetworks), Erik Larsen (Spider-Man, Savage Dragon) and Jim Valentino (X-Men spin-off Guardians of the Galaxy).
The signing was scheduled to begin at 11am, and a line of fans started forming early in the morning and snaked around the building for the duration of the event. Atomic Comics had bottled water on hand for the thirsty, and when the stockpile ran out - none other than Jim Lee himself foot the bill for fresh provisions. Then the Image founders personally handed out refreshments to those waiting patiently in line.
Fans got a good amount of face time with the Image creators - they were permitted up to five signed items per founder - and they got the opportunity of a lifetime to chat up their favorite artists. To accommodate the crowd - estimated to be in the neighborhood of 1,000 people - the Image boys stayed well past the scheduled finish time, and everyone went home happy.
