Look Out Stern, Here Comes Todd McFarlane
Todd Plays Sixth Man on ESPN's 'Sports Grille' Radio Show
May 2, 2000
It's said that the average person will change careers several times. Well, we all know Todd's not average, but he started a new career April 20 - radio talk show host.
Don't worry, Todd's not throwing in the toy towel. However, when either Ron Wolfley or Dave Burns, hosts of Phoenix-based ESPN Radio 860 KMVP's "The Sports Grille," can't do their afternoon show, Todd, schedule permitting, will come off the bench to co-host the four-hour program.
"Ron and I talked about this a few weeks ago, and it finally worked out that I could sit in for him when he was traveling to cover an Arizona Rattlers arena football game last week," Todd said. "It was great spending four straight hours talking sports."
No stranger to sports and talk radio, Todd is a regular guest on The Grille, calling in or going in-studio every few weeks. During the broadcast, Todd interacted with guests, callers and talked with Phoenix Suns Coach Scott Skiles and the team's president Bryan Colangelo.
"He clearly knew his stuff," said Dave, who would welcome Todd back anytime. "It was refreshingly different to co-host a show with a part-owner (of the Edmonton Oilers). Any doubts about how much he would know were quickly gone. He came to the table armed with a vast knowledge of sports."
One segment involved a regular weekly feature with Pierre McGuire, the "NHL Stanley Cup Playoff Insider" for the station. Pierre, who is the former coach of the Hartford Whalers and serves as color commentator for the Montreal Canadiens, gives weekly insight on the NHL playoffs. Pierre, Todd and Dave hit it off well, discussing hockey, the Oilers and the playoff situation as it stood last week. Pierre even commented that he's read several of Todd's comic books and wished him well on behalf of the Oilers' first-round playoff series, which ended the next day.
Todd was a fixture of sports radio last week. He was also on Sports Byline USA with Ron Barr on April 19. During that show, which has become the most popular radio sports talk show in the country with a national market covering more than 250 affiliates and nearly 2 million listeners each week, Todd talked about sports collectibles and The McFarlane Collection.
