'Altar Boys' Gets Dangerous With Animation

Filming of New Foster Film Set to Begin

May 8, 2000

Todd McFarlane and Jodie Foster

Casting has been completed on the new Jodie Foster film The Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys, which will feature several Todd McFarlane-directed animated sequences interspersed throughout the live action. Filming begins the second week of May in North and South Carolina.

An Egg Pictures production, Altar Boys is a dark comedy that follows the lives of several eighth-grade altar boys in a parish school. The boys turn their creative energy toward creating an illicit comic book featuring their superhero alteregos. Their artwork is, unfortunately, seized by the disciplinarian Sister Assumpta (Foster) and the boys plot revenge. Ultimately, according to a press release, "both heartbreaking and hilarious, Altar Boys captures the anarchic joy and sublime intensity of adolescence."

The animated comic sequences by Todd McFarlane Entertainment are being produced by Todd and TME President Terry Fitzgerald and will be used in several spots as an integral part of the story line and plot advancement.

Directed by Peter Care based on a novel by Chris Fuhrman, the film stars Foster (Silence of the Lambs), Vincent D'Onofrio (Full Metal Jacket), Kieran Culkin (The Cider House Rules), Emile Hirsch and Jena Malone (Stepmom).

An exact date of release has not been issued.
