Bigger Than Jerry Lewis

French Distributors Prepare for Upcoming Cons

December 23, 1999

OK, maybe not he's not quite as large as Lewis, but Todd McFarlane is getting big in France. To further penetrate the French psyche, Todd McFarlane Productions is taking part in this year's Angoulême Comic Con in Angoulême, France, Jan. 26-30.

  Spawn in France

This huge con has existed for more than 25 years and some 200,000 people attended in 1999. Each year various awards are given, including "Le Grand Prix" (the grand prize), which is awarded by a special jury to an artist in honor of his/her career accomplishments. Last year's winner, Robert Crumb, is now president of the jury. He'll also draw the con's official poster.

Todd McFarlane Productions will be represented in Angoulême by Semic S.A., which publishes the French editions of Spawn, Curse of the Spawn and KISS: Psycho Circus. In Angoulême, Semic will celebrate its 50th Anniversary Jubilee. To commemorate the big event, they'll unveil a special issue of Spawn, with a cover drawn by popular French artist Jean-Yves Mitton. You can bet this will be a collector's item someday! The celebration lasts all year long as Semic will launch French editions of Sam and Twitch, Spawn: The Undead and Spawn: The Dark Ages, throughout 2000.

In recent years, toys have become a big part of the Angoulême Con, so McFarlane Toys will be part of the action, too. Planete Fan, our French toy distributor, will share a booth with Semic, displaying all our trés cool new action figures. This con is open to the public.

Of course the real focus on toys will be at the Salon International du Jouet. Held Jan. 27-31 in Paris, Salon International du Jouet is France's toy fair for industry professionals. Here, too, we'll be represented by Planete Fan, who will have a 500-square-foot labyrinth-shaped booth with an entire section dedicated to McFarlane Toys. As our distributor, Planete Fan will be showing off all our new lines to French toy retailers, and you can bet they'll take notice and stock up on McFarlane Toys. Our Austin Powers and Movie Maniacs 2 figures were the best-selling action figures in Toys R Us France last week!
